Could pharmacists of the past ever have imagined electronic prescriptions, pharmacy management systems, automated dispensers, or any of the dozens of other features that make today's pharmacies dramatically more efficient? Probably not. But then again, are the pharmacies of today ready for the significant changes that lie ahead thanks to the tremendous advances made in technology?
Ready or not, technology is set to essentially reshape the pharmacy we know today. Dispensing may largely be executed by robots, genetics will help determine patient medications, which in some instances might be customized and manufactured via a 3-D printer, and patients will be able to pick up medications from secure kiosks, 24/7. And the biggest beneficiary? The pharmacist-patient relationship. By many accounts, pharmacists can expect a significant restructuring of their day, with chunks of time available for patient consultations and enhanced clinical offerings.
A new white paper from Micro Merchant Systems, "The Pharmacy of the Future: Technology-Based Efficiencies that Enable Increased Focus on Patient-Care," delves into some of the more impressive technology-based undertakings that are expected to dramatically reshape pharmacy operations.
