Folic acid is effective in the treatment of anemia, especially
macrocytic anemia common in pregnancy.
During pregnancy, folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects and may
possibly prevent low birth weights and pre-term delivery.
Folic acid helps with the formation and maturation of red and white
blood cells.
Additional counseling points:
Folic acid is a water soluble B-Vitamin with excess being
excreted in the urine.
Doses of folic acid greater than 1000mcg/day may mask
a Vitamin B-12 deficiency.
Folic acid has no side effects.
Folic Acid may be found in green leafy vegetables (excluding iceberg and head
lettuce), liver and brewers yeast are the best sources of folic acid.
