Vitamin D (Ergocalciferol)


Some common functions:
Vitamin D helps with the absorption of calcium in the intestine.
Vitamin D helps regulate calcium deposits to the bones, and calcium removal from the bones.

Additional counseling points:
The classic Vitamin D deficiency disease is rickets.

Vitamin D, Ergocalciferol to be exact, is synthesized by the body upon exposure to ultraviolet light and synthesis decreases with age.

Vitamin D fortified milk is the most common form of supplemental Vitamin D.  Cod liver oil and other fish oils are also very good sources of Vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and is stored primarily in the liver and adipose tissue.  High, prolonged doses can be toxic.
