A scientific training program meant laboratory experience. In this case the pharmacognosy laboratory included a large collection “of nearly 5,000 specimens, both dry and in liquid. The commercial samples are of especial value to students, since all grades of drugs are shown, as well as adulterations and substitutions.” The education of pharmacists in the early twentieth century meant keeping up with the new drugs of the time. “At the time of the World’s Fair, two valuable additions of foreign drugs were made; one a collection of over one hundred Malay drugs, the other a collection of drugs from the island of Ceylon. Worthy of mention are also a collection of choice drugs from Messrs. Leyn and Fink, a materia medica cabinet from Parke, Davis & Co., a collection of official drugs from Schieffelin & Co., another from Gilpin, Langdon & Co., and collections of powdered drugs from Gilpin, Langdon & Co., and from Eli, Lilly & Co.” The materia medica cabinet mentioned in the 1902 UW catalog is the same as the one housed now in the Kremers Reference Files. Modern pharmacy students could try their hand at identifying drug products from these speci-mens kept in their original containers since the early twentieth century.
