COMING TO YOUR MAILBOX IN JANUARY For IACP, that’s one thing that is clear. We must, with the support of other pharmacy associations, other allies within compounding, our colleagues within the healthcare professions, go back in and fix those problems within the Drug Quality and Security Act that conflict with how pharmacists and pharmacies are regulated and overseen at the state level. Decisions on what to compound with and how to compound must be left to the profession and not to federal regulators who have little to no understanding of the day-to-day decision making that goes into appropriate patient care management. And all regulators, be they from state or federal agencies, should inspect using the USP standards upon which we can and should be evaluated. As President of IACP and as a compounding pharmacist, I know we’re still in the “figure it out” phase of our continuum. I also know that the passion and dedication that each of us bring to providing customized patient care, the very heart and soul of the pharmacy profession, will see us through this. Today, we’ve got a new reality. But it’s one WE collectively can shape, change, and grow moving forward.
