Used primarily as an excipient in oral peptide (i.e. semaglutide) formulations, SNAC acts as a non-covalent carrier for medications like oral peptides that would otherwise be destroyed in the digestive tract. SNAC also functions as a localized buffer in the stomach, neutralizing the microenvironment around the medication and protecting sensitive APIs from acids and enzymes like pepsin. It is well known that SNAC also increases the lipophilicity of several drug molecules, enabling them to pass through the cellular lining of the stomach and intestine, allowing the drug to enter the bloodstream.
