ST. LOUIS (Sept. 27, 2022) – Mayo Clinic Arizona physician Kenneth J. Mishark, M.D., presented a case study of one tertiary care facility’s drug diversion discovery at the International Health Facility Diversion Association (IHFDA) 2022 Annual Conference in Nashville, Tenn. “The Limitations of Report-Based Systems: Results of One Facility’s Drug Diversion Implementation,” follows a 300-bed hospital’s installation of a drug diversion platform called MAAP Analytics®. The poster was sponsored by ANiGENT, a fast-growing Midwest healthcare solutions provider.
“The case study depicts the difficulty of preventing drug diversion with an old-fashioned system in today’s modern clinical environment,” said Dr. Mishark. “The medical center generates more than 65,000 transactions every 30 days. Keeping track of this amount of data would be an impossible task for any investigator.”
Although administrators did not have reasons to believe there were incidences of drug diversion occurring, the MAAP Analytics platform quickly identified two individuals at high risk of diverting controlled medications. Within minutes of it being turned on, it tracked a contract nurse and a full-time employee taking medications in various locations at specific times. As a result of the investigation, both individuals were terminated and reported to the state licensing board for their efforts.
“The swiftness with which these individuals were found speaks to the ingenuity behind MAAP Analytics,” said ANiGENT chief product officer Charles D’Amato, RPh. “We thank Dr. Mishark for telling this story and the consequences of unchecked diversion.”
Dr. Mishark is an internist at Mayo Clinic Arizona who serves as the vice chair of the Medication Diversion Prevention Subcommittee and as a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Subcommittee and Clinical Practice Committee. He is also a senior fellow in the Society of Hospital Medicine and a fellow in the American College of Physicians. In addition, he has co-authored over seven clinical publications and served as a physician with the U.S. Air Force.
