Preceptor Recognitions College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Hugh G. Boothe B.S., M.S., PharmD 2011 - 2012 Institutional Preceptor of the Year We Thank You for Investing in the Future of Pharmacy Dr. Boothe precepts advanced pharmacy practice students in an infectious disease elective at Jacobi Medical Center, Bronx, NY. Students who nominated him for this award acknowledge his mentorship and dedication to patient care. His fervor to instill clinical knowledge and skills has helped to shape their attitudes and values about the profession of pharmacy. Dr. Boothe was truly one of the greatest preceptors I have ever encountered. There’s so much that I was blessed to see and learn under his guidance. His passion for infectious disease was evident in the way he handled each patient. He deserves to be recognized for his great service to our community. He not only serviced me as a preceptor, but also as a wise and honest life coach. Dr. Boothe has many years of clinical professional knowledge which he is good at sharing with students. Dr Boothe is also a very compassionate person with an impressive professional career which makes him a great role model. He has inspired me to want to ” ” “ “ pursue a more clinical role in pharmacy. It was both a pleasure and an honor to be his student. SUPERIOR PRECEPTORS The Roosevelt University College of Pharmacy recently polled our P2 students, Class of 2014, and asked them which of their preceptors has had the greatest impact on their pharmacy practice education. We also asked them to identify the exceptional traits of the preceptor they named to support the choice they made. While their answers didn’t point to any one preceptor, the survey did tell us what characteristics make a great experiential educator in a student’s eyes. Michigan P-4, Roxanne Naanos, was mentored by Schepers during her third-year direct patient care and health system/hospital pharmacy practice experience at the VA. She commends him for his compassionate approach to teaching. “He is clear with his expectations, provides thoughtful feedback, praises us when we show progress, and creates wonderful opportunities for self-improvement,” Naanos says. “I feel lucky to have worked with him.” “There is so much opportunity and so many new challenges in our profession,” Schepers remarks. “I really love hospital pharmacy practice.” Pictured right to left: Greg Schepers, Frank Ascione (Dean and Professor of Social and Administrative Sciences, University of Michigan College of Pharmacy) On behalf of the faculty and staff of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy we salute all of our preceptors for their significant contributions in preparing the next generation of pharmacists. Above all, they appreciated a preceptor who took the time to teach them about all aspects of the pharmacy’s environment and seemed to enjoy sharing his or her knowledge with the next generation of pharmacy professionals. The students also liked preceptors who asked challenging questions and made them accountable for finding the correct answers. Another positive trait that many of our students mentioned was the ability to listen to a student’s viewpoint and take the time to explain why it’s right or wrong. At Roosevelt, we feel privileged to call so many exemplary preceptors our partners. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your dedication to our students and the College of Pharmacy.
