A typical waste event looks routine on paper. A nurse draws a partial dose. The remainder is “wasted” — witnessed, documented, and dropped into a receptacle at the point of care. From that moment until the receptacle is picked up, transported, and processed off-site, the wasted fentanyl is still fentanyl. That interval — sometimes hours, sometimes days, sometimes longer — is what we call the window of danger. It is where diversion happens: not at administration, not in the vault, but in the gap between “wasted” and “destroyed.”
