EMR vs. EHR
Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) and EHRs are both digital systems for storing patient health information, but they differ in scope and intended use. An EMR is a digital version of a patient’s medical chart that is maintained within a single healthcare organization or practice. An EHR contains similar clinical information but is designed to facilitate the secure exchange of patient records between authorized healthcare providers, organizations, and care settings. As a result, EHRs support the sharing of longitudinal patient information across the healthcare continuum, while EMRs primarily support documentation and clinical workflows within an individual practice.
