Presented by: David A. Ball, MS, Ball Consulting Group, LLC Program Type: Knowledge-Based ACVP – This Works for Me! Caribbean Salons I & II 0201-9999-14-004-L04-P/T Potency tests, known as quantitative tests, are designed to determine how much of the active drug is in the sample. Stability tests are used to determine a beyond-use date for a preparation. Employing the proper method to determine potency or stability is key to understanding the difference between potency testing and stability testing. Methods of determining potency may or may not be stability indicating, but stability can be determined only by a stability-indicating method. A stability-indicating method can determine both potency and stability. It is important that compounding pharmacists understand the differences between potency and stability tests and that these tests are made an integral part of the quality assurance program. At the conclusion of this educational session, the pharmacist and technician attendee will be able to: • Explain the difference between expiration date and beyond use dating. • Discuss what seven factors affect stability of compounded products. • Describe the difference between potency testing and stability studies (BUD). • Compare the strengths and weaknesses of several innovative practice techniques when applied to his/her pharmacy practice. Presented by: Clara Brown, RPh, FACVP, Animal Solutions Pharmacy, Inc.; Henry “Skip” Lenz, PharmD, FACVP, Skip’s Pharmacy Program Type: Knowledge-Based Fort Lauderdale, Florida ~ February 5-8, 2014 4 This program is made possible through an unrestricted educational grant-in-aid from Humco Compounding.
