The Act provides an event reporting shield for medication dispensing errors to remove fear of legal liability, professional sanctions, and injury to professional reputation that prevents pharmacists from sharing information that can improve quality. The Patient Safety Organization (PSO) framework provides an opportunity for pharmacies to participate in continuous quality improvement in a safe environment so that pharmacists and technicians can share information about trends and best practices associated with dispensing errors or other medication errors with absolute confidentiality and insulated from discovery and litigation. In this one-hour session you will learn how to align your business strategies with the PSQIA’s objectives of improving quality, enhancing liability protections and reducing dispensing errors. At the conclusion of this educational session, the pharmacist and technician attendee will be able to: • Define the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 (PSQIA). • Identify the operational and legal benefits of working with a Patient Safety Organization (PSO). • Outline elements of a Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) program. • Describe two Alliance for Patient Medication Safety (APMS) programs that collect and analyze quality-related patient safety data. Since human insulin products are commonly used in dogs and cats, it is critical that pharmacists not only understand the diabetes disease process in pets, but also how insulin use in dogs and cats differs from insulin use in humans. At the end of this presentation, pharmacists and technicians should understand their role in the treatment of diabetic pets. At the conclusion of this educational session, the pharmacist and technician attendee will be able to: • Describe diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats. • Discuss pharmacologic agents used in treating DM in dogs and cats. • Determine the pharmacist’s and technician’s role in treating diabetic dogs and cats.
