Interview with Steve Getz
President & CEO of UDS
What led you to UDS?
How you get somewhere is always interesting. I worked servicing hospitals very early in my career. I got to understand the overall importance of healthcare in the US. After various roles in hospitals and with a few healthcare companies I was working in Senior Management with a pharmaceutical firm in South Florida. While I absolutely love South Florida, my wife and I decided to move to the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina to raise our kids and explore this opportunity at UDS after it was presented to me by a very close friend. It would allow me to raise my kids in this beautiful area and stay in touch with helping patients by repackaging lifesaving meds into a unit-dose format.
What has surprised you most about the work that you do at UDS?
The overall intricacies of the repackaging world. From the machinery to repackaging bulk product to properly labeling that product and getting these meds to the bedside was a very tall order that needs a great deal of oversight. What we do must be done correctly. Fortunately for me, we have an outstanding team getting this all of this work completed.
What do you know now that you didn’t know 3 years ago?
That this niche industry is ever changing! For instance, the serialization of drug product to ensure that each medicine is tracked and traced properly to ensure the overall safety of the patient.
I never thought that I would become an expert in drug serialization!
What are some of the biggest obstacles you have found while here at UDS and how have they been overcome?
The overall amount of human and technical resources that are needed to get these medicines that come into our facility and out the door in a safe, prompt manner. I overcome these obstacles each and every day by having an outstanding team of professionals that can tackle any issue.
What makes UDS special?
Again, I can’t do any of this without the team of individuals that come into work every day at UDS. They are special to me and we’re a family. They truly care about our product and that patient safety comes 1st.
