Covid-19 Related Research Studies Retracted
The search for therapies to treat Covid-19 is still on. This week, two major medical journals retracted separate studies related to Covid-19 treatments due to an inability to validate the data and methodology used in the studies.
The Lancet retracted a study on hydroxychloroquine, and the New England Journal of Medicine’s retracted study focused on blood pressure medications.
While research may ultimately show that hydroxychloroquine and other therapies used to treat patients with Covid-19 are ineffective, healthcare providers including pharmacists should always look at research data carefully. Ultimately, the decision to use any therapy, especially off label, requires weighing the risks and benefits, and it necessitates a team approach in the patient care triad of patient, prescriber, and pharmacist.
