Acute Pain in the Emergency Department: An Emerging Role for Non-Opioids?

The opioid epidemic has prompted a re-evaluation of when opioids are necessary and the risk/benefit ratio of their use in the treatment of acute pain. This application-based continuing pharmacy education course provides a ‘journal club format’ discussion for pharmacists and student pharmacists to evaluate a randomized trial comparing opioid and nonopioid strategies in the management of acute extremity pain in the emergency department. Join us as we discuss how to apply this study’s findings and current CDC guidelines regarding opioid use to clinical practice.
