What Regulations Govern Medication Waste In Dentistry?

Many dentists will agree that one of the most challenging things for them to keep up with is maintaining full compliance to all regulations regarding the medication waste in dentistry.  Dental offices and oral surgeons need to use a variety of medications in the course of their treatments such as prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, liquid IV used for sedation, and Amalgam which is used in dental fillings and contains Mercury. It is important to follow proper pharmaceutical waste disposal practices in all healthcare industries including oral health and dentistry.

Pharmaceutical waste disposal guidelines are tightly regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, and the Drug Enforcement Administration, DEA.  There are additional regulations that facilities must meet for the proper management and disposal of medications and pharmaceutical waste at facility, tribal, local, state and federal levels. The Code of Federal Regulations, CFR, 40, Part 441, which provides the general definition, pretreatment standards, reporting and recordkeeping instructions applicable to  dischargers or an agent or representative of the dental discharger.
