Employee engagement is important. When employees like working and enjoy their job, they are more productive and provide better service. Here are a few tips on boosting employee morale at your pharmacy and making it a place where people enjoy working.
1. Lay out your goals.
Let your staff know what your goals are in both the short term and the long term. This will help everyone to get on the same page and working in the same direction. Otherwise, you will be going it alone, or you may even encounter intransigence from your staff if they don’t understand why you want certain tasks or projects done.
For example, would you like to expand your services, open new locations, or create closer ties with healthcare providers? If your staff knows where you want to go, they can help by providing ideas of their own.
2. Recognize the efforts of your staff
If you want employees who are engaged and productive, you need to recognize and reward their efforts. Let them know you appreciate their hard work. If all they hear is criticism, they will eventually stop giving their best effort.
It doesn’t take much. Often, a simple “thank you,” or “great job” from you will be enough to make their day. Your recognition will carry even more weight if you also publicly inform the worker’s colleagues of their recognition.
3. Give them support
First, you have to get to know your staff members, learn what their strengths and weaknesses are, and what areas they most enjoy working in, so you can best match the worker to the job. You should also give them opportunities to gain new skills through training.
4. Learn to delegate
This has several advantages. First of all, it gives your staff members a chance to learn and grow in their job by giving them additional challenges and responsibilities. It also gives you more time to work on the tasks important to you.
5. Emphasize teamwork
Discuss with your staff ways that they can improve cooperation and collaboration in the workplace. Talk to them about problems that can affect safety and productivity.
6. Be a leader
A true leader cares about their team and works to give them the resources and support they need to do their jobs well.
A true leader leads by example, demonstrating the behavior and judgment expected from staff.
