The Future of Environmental Monitoring: Deep Learning and Artificial Intelligence

In a previous post, I laid out the SmartSense philosophy of IoT innovation. As a quick recap, our engineers are always guided, first and foremost, by solving our customers’ real-world business problems. This practical approach makes it super easy for our customers to:

— Install and onboard our solution

— Ensure assets are monitored properly

— Maintain compliance and meet SOPs

— Gain insights from the data to help optimize business processes

In this post, I want to talk about how new and exciting innovations in the Internet of Things (IoT) space will enable SmartSense to evolve our environmental monitoring solution.

Around the Corner: Additional Environmental Monitoring Sensors

Currently, SmartSense is the state-of-the-art temperature and humidity monitoring company. Where do I see we can add value for our customers in the future?

As an IoT environmental conditioning company, there's a natural tendency for us to add additional sensing capability to help our customers obtain better controls, cost reduction, and business optimization opportunities. These innovations are just around the corner, and we will certainly introduce new sensors in the future.

How will this be beneficial? By optimizing, maximizing, and expanding our data from a growing host of sensors, we can help customers take even more cost out of their business and get an even greater ROI.

For example, we could combine our temperature data with new data, such as power or gas monitoring. That, in turn, will enable us to provide new insights, for instance, about problems with the compressors in refrigeration or freezer units. We envision offering predictive maintenance recommendations to help our customers fine-tune their investments.

Taking advantage of the incredible amount of data collected from sensors, we’ll provide more comprehensive environmental monitoring solutions that will provide transformative opportunities for our customers.

The Promise of Artificial Intelligence & Deep Learning

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rightfully getting a lot of important buzz, and it's no longer hype. In fact, SmartSense will continue to invest in AI research and development.

The roots of AI go back to the 1930s and 1940s. At that time, Alan Turing, a well-known computer scientist, came up with what is called the “Turing test.” It states that, if a user interacts with a human and a machine but can’t tell the difference, that’s pretty good proof of artificial intelligence.

As AI evolved over the decades, the concept of “machine learning” emerged, which refers to the capacity for a computer to use data to figure out complex relationships. Fast forward to today – our computer resources and available data sets have advanced significantly. Currently, the state-of-the-art of machine learning is now referred to as “deep learning,” which can manipulate a massive amount of data to extract relationships using complex neural networks.

In the past, with machine learning, human scientists were required to extract the features relevant to the data set. Today, deep learning techniques can automatically extract the relevant features without human intervention. That’s a revolutionary benefit since deep learning can provide insights human analysts might not be able to achieve on their own...
