In our previous blog post, we discussed how hospital central pharmacies need to process medicine returns everyday. Let’s briefly recap the problem here.

Every day, hospital pharmacies receive hundreds to thousands of returned medications from nursing units across their premises. Medicine returns occur due to a variety of reasons such as changes in a patient’s prescription, or their status (transfers, discharges, etc). Returned medicines are manually sorted by technicians who scan barcodes, check expiry dates, and restock dispensers, a tedious, time-consuming, and undesirable task. The first question that pops into our heads when we find such a problem is “could a robot do this task instead?” mainly because automating medicine returns handling and quick restocking would lead to accurate inventory counts and preventing unnecessary reordering, reduce medicine waste, and save pharmacy technicians time to focus on high-value tasks.
